Our Development Into a Full-Service Taxonomy Laboratory

Biologica has been providing taxonomic services for government and industry for over 20 years. In that time we have expanded our staff and our services, and our growth and development continues!

Biologica is Canada’s preeminent full-service, high-capacity aquatic taxonomy laboratory with an established reputation for the highest standards of accuracy, consistency, efficiency, and customer service. Our staff are marine and freshwater specialists with over 150 years of combined taxonomic experience. We perform taxonomic analyses and provide field support for surveys of marine and freshwater benthos, zooplankton, ichthyoplankton, and phytoplankton. We have a particular expertise in aquatic habitats throughout Western Canada, the Pacific Northwest, and the Canadian Arctic. We also have performed analyses on samples originating in regions ranging from the Atlantic Coast of North America to Indonesia. Biologica processes approximately 5000 samples per year in addition to continuously developing our services and engaging in research and development initiatives.

In 2012, Tara Macdonald became President and CEO of Biologica, and since then has overseen the two-fold increase in laboratory capacity and sales. During this time, Biologica has diversified and strengthened its core services, expanding these to include freshwater zooplankton, phytoplankton, ichthyoplankton, fish diet analyses, data analysis, and reporting. Biologica’s success is driven by our continued and unwavering commitment to rigorous quality control, guaranteed turnaround times, and the continued professional development of our staff.

Biologica’s customers include consulting firms and government entities who require taxonomic analysis and/or field support for components of aquatic biomonitoring programs. These analyses are used for Aquatic Effects Monitoring Programs (AEMP), Environmental Effects Monitoring Programs (EEM), Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluent Monitoring, Environmental Impact Assessments, Ecological Risk Assessments, among many other initiatives.
